Fondazione, enti e reti nello spazio europeo della ricerca. La sussidiarietà in atto
By Patrizia Fariselli, Marco Fortis and Alberto Quadrio Curzio Il Mulino - March 2009This volume is the result of the meeting "Foundations and Associations for Innovation and Economy" organised by the Fondazione Edison in Milan on 7th-8th June, 2007, which saw the participation of a number of European and Italian organisations operating in the sector of scientific and technological research. The group of participants, significant for their high scientific level, resources handled, network extension and institutional diversification, is representative of the rich and vital fabric where research develops in Europe and expands the European research area. The volume reviews a vision of Era (European Research Area) from three angles: from the top, by examining the origin of the research policy of the EU; from the bottom, through the papers presented by the participating Foundations and Associations; and from outside by focusing on the interaction process between policy makers and research makers. The volume consists of two parts: the first summarises Era's institutional, political and organisational steps, providing key figures; the second contains profiles of the participating foundations and associations vis-à-vis Era. In the final conclusions Alberto Quadrio Curzio concentrates on the principle of subsidiarity for development - centred on the balance between institutions, society and market - as a key to the construction of the European research area.
